Coastal Access
Bob W. reports that Smuggler’s Cove is not for sale. (The sign seen there is for a property on Chapman’s Point) The lot will be built upon, no surfer trail is likely. Bill will try to get more information (owners’ name is Pauli).
Bob W. reported on the Jeter property sale – California State Parks has approved the acquisition of the Jeter Property. The Coastal Conservancy will pay ½ the appraisal cost with the property owners (Jeter) paying the other ½. The surfer trail is not in jeopardy. He expressed gratitude to Marilyn Murphy, the District State Park Superintendent for the Mendocino District.
Wave Energy update
Mike B. was not present to report. Dave W. explained Wave Shock and how it will affect the ocean environment if wave strength is diminished.
Surfari
Motion approved to have Surfari at the Caspar Community Center.
Surfari planning meeting will be held January 17 at 4 p.m. at the Dooley’s.

Discussion took place regarding raffle (a big moneymaker). Suggestions were made to use chapter money to buy longboard and/or gift certificates for wetsuits to use as raffle items.
Open Discussion
Dave W. proposed that a blog be established on the local chapter website, especially to connect with younger surfers. Discussion ensued. A decision was made to try the blog out on a test basis.
A suggestion was made and approved to pay for the website out of the chapter treasury, $240 a year paid in advance.
Kevin suggests soliciting advertisements and/or donations from local businesses to help pay for the website.

Wave Energy Update: No change since last meeting.
San Francisco Surfrider Conference: Walt and Dave reported highlights of event.
Blue Water Task Force: Jackie and Victoria continue testing. Jackie is covering for Jack C. while he is out of town.
Coastal Access: Bob W. reported latest status of the Virgin Creek Surfer Trail acquisition. Marilyn Murphy of Ca. State Parks says we are now #2 on the list of prospective acquisitions. The State Parks and City of Ft. Bragg are our key allies in this process.
International Surfing Day was held on June 20th. This date is chosen for the summer solstice. Bob W. requests that we hold our local chapter get -together on a weekend so those with work responsibilities can attend. Those present agreed to do so for next years event.
Our Coastal Clean Up Day will be Saturday, September 20th at Ward Ave. 9:00am.
Surfrider gathering at Vicantos restaurant : It was suggested and agreed by all present to have a surfrider get-together and dinner , as part of the ongoing Wednesday night “surf movie nights.” In this way we hope to encourage a younger crowd to join the group. Walt will contact Lara from the Lost Coast Surf Shack to help promote the event. October 15th at 6:30.
Surfrider is in support of the Mendocino Land Trust acquisition of the Hare Creek Property. All members agree to support the MLT in this endeavor. Bob and Walt will draft a letter of support. It is anticipated that acquisition could occur in January 09. We would help raise endowment money for the management of public access way.
Ban on Offshore Drilling: Walt has drafted a letter for our local chapter, supporting the moratorium of offshore drilling off the California coast. All present approve, and will join with the existing north coast coalition in keeping the moratorium in place.
Smugglers Cove Access: Bob W. Two lots which are key to access for Smuggler’s trail have recently come on the market. Bob has spoken to the owner of the properties.
A plan was presented for possible acquisition of the lots, followed by the creation of an access trail and rezoning the remaining property. Bob will pursue the possibilities.
Election of Officers: Dave Wright will replace Bob Whitney as Vice-Chair. Bob will serve as Acquisitions Coordinator. Other officers to continue as before.
Dates to remember: Coastal Clean Day, September 20 and Vicantos , October 15th.

2008 Spring Surfari: March 29, 08. Caspar Community Ctr. is reserved with a $50.00 deposit. Deposit due 1 week before event.
Dawn the DJ will play a variety of music.
Jackie will make a list of volunteers with a schedule for serving beer/food etc.
Set up will start at 5:00, possibly 4:30, as Dawn needs 1.5 hours to set up.
Ticket sellers at front door will also check ID’s and hand stamp if over 21.
Andy presented us with his awesome new flyer for the event which will be distributed by various members.
Julie will be in charge of the membership table. Bob suggested having a guest book to collect e-mails and to check which guests are S.R. members. Table will announce elections coming up for the Board.
Virgin Creek: State Parks asked if we would be interested providing ongoing periodic clean-up and in raising $30,000 for a site maintenance endowment to, we agreed to seek grant funding and partners in this effort
Wave Energy: Mike absent. Dave: Map made by Mike shows surf zones but not all surf areas in order to give significance to the surf zones that we are most concerned about and have the highest use
MLPA: As a chapter, we are currently abstaining from participation in the MLPA process and will wait and see as MLPA’s progress.
Statewide chapter conference is schedule April 11-13 if any members are interested in participating. Site is yet to be announced.

Meeting Re: Surfari Fundraiser
Meeting held at 6 p.m. at Rod and Julie’s, potluck dinner.

Jackie has reserved the Caspar Community Center for our fundraiser on Saturday, March 29, 2008. There is a 6 hour minimum for renting the center, at $28 per hour, totaling $168.00.
Time of Surfari: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Jackie has spoken to a d.j. who charges $25 per hour. It was agreed that Jackie would confirm with the d.j. for March 29, for 4 hours’ work with 1 additional hour, if necessary, to set up and clean up. Total estimated cost: $250 for 5 hours.
Walt will arrange for the permit to serve wine and beer (cost: $25)
Rod and Julie will contact the North Coast Brewery regarding beer donation or discount.
Dave W. will contact people regarding wine donation or discount.

Mendocino Surfrider Minutes, Nov, 10 2007
Meeting held at Walt and Jackie’s, 4:00 pm, followed by a potluck dinner.

Treasurer’s Report: Jackie – No expenditures. We agreed to keep our bank account funds for future use, as needed.
Blue Water Task Force – Jack and Victoria are continuing to test every 2 weeks. Caspar, Hare Creek and Virgin Creek. Most recent test results are not available. The Oct. 9 test at Pudding Creek (ocean beach) came back polluted.
Pudding Creek Lagoon – Dave spoke to Mendocino County Environmental Health about posting the lagoon. MCEH recommended an approach used in Sonoma County to handle a similar situation. A permanent posting warning against pollution, using diplomatic language. The group discussed photographing the sign in question, and sending a copy to State Parks along with a cover letter. Dave will continue to pursue this.
Coastal Access and Enhancement – Virgin Creek Trail and Parking – Bob has been facilitating and keeping us posted with e-mails. Bob and Walt drafted a letter of support which was forwarded to Kendall Smith, 4 district supervisor. She sent a letter of support to State Parks District superintendent, Marilyn Murphy. Walt contacted Murphy, who says that our request is on their acquisition list. The next step is arranging funding for the appraisal.
>Old Business – Wax baskets – Rod and Julie put one at VC. The Surfrider logo is on the bucket, with wax in bucket.
Making Waves Article – Great promo for our work on the VC property and trail. We’re encouraged to contribute other articles and photos for out chapter.
Winter Event – we would like to do a fun party, with potluck dinner, beginning in the afternoon. With a good dance band. Late January or February.
Venue – Portuguese Hall (Dave will check on cost and availability.)

Surfrider Minutes, May 26, 2007
Meeting held at Walt and Jackies, 4:00 pm, potluck

Blue Water Task Force Jack, Jackie and Victoria have been
testing. Bob recommends that we request occasional winter testing
(after rains) in lieu of testing every week in the summer. Jackie
will call John Morley at the Health Department to see if this is
possible.
Water Testing Action Plan Walt will set up a meeting with
supervisors (David Colfax and Kendall Smith). He will mention the
lack of testing/posting at Pudding Creek Lagoon, as well as regular
Surfrider testing sites. Rodney offered to attend also. County/City
Dept. of Health is usually responsible for posting. State Parks owns
land and parking at Pudding Creek.
Coastal Access and Enhancement Virgin Creek trail and
parking Bob and Walt met with Marilyn Murphy (State Parks
Dept), Karen Gear (Coastal Conservancy), and Renee Pasquenelle (State
Park Ecologist). They favor purchase of the 2 lots that are for sale
on the west side of Hwy1.
The cost of appraising the property would be shared (50/50) by the
Coastal Conservancy and the property owner (Jeeter).
We are encouraged to talk to City Council members and express our
support for a resolution to acquire the lots. Ft. Bragg mayor, Doug
Hammerstrom, plans to put the resolution on the City Council
agenda.

It was suggested that we leave Membership packets at the Pt. Arena
Pizza parlour & other P.A. locations and the Westport store.
Rodney and Julie suggest that we create suitable containers for
Surf Wax, for common use and selected beaches to promote Surfrider
Membership.
Senior Center Donation The Senior Center has allowed us to
use their facility for 3 events and no charge. It was moved (Kevin)
and seconded (Julie) that we donate $100.00 to the Senior Center.

tandem with maintenance of Haul road between MacKerricher park bridge
and Pudding Creek. Some areas of the road and sewer pipe are in bad
condition. Victoria will report and next meeting.
Annual Party/Fundraiser 2007 surfari
Date set for Sat, Feb 10th. Similar format to last year. Jam will
look into Student Surf videos. Victoria will request permission for
use of Womens surf video.

Treasures report - Renewed the Mendocino Chapters
Chamber of Commerce membership.
Blue Water Task Force Pudding Creek Lagoon is littered
with trash and the hazard posting is not there. Why is it not posted?
We would like to see a permanent warning posting.
Mackerricher Bob checked it today and predicts the loss of
the sewer line this winter if Virgin Cree k maintains its current
north direction against Haul Rd. He spoke to a public works employee
of State parks and was told it was in a budget request for a
replacement at that site. Bob Volunteered to draft a letter to State
Parks to allocated funding to relocate the sewer line to the east
side of Haul rd., from Laguna Pt. Camp Ground to the sewerage pump
station south of the Virgin Creek bridge.
(Surfrider Float) To be entered in the July 4th parade in
Mendocino. Have members ride bikes with wheeling surf board racks.
Pass out membership forms, mission statement, candy and possibly
stickers with our logo. This would be our 2nd annual membership
drive.
Open Discussion - (Making Waves) Bob stated that the magazine has
our name listed incorrectly. It should say, Mendocino County, instead
of Mendocino. Jackie will call the editor to have it corrected.
(Logo) Wyatt suggests having a school contest to have a
local student design a new logo, and to bring awareness to our local
kids of the surfrider foundation.
(Mendocino Wine Co.) The company has offered us a 50%
discount on wine for our fundraisers.
(Surfari) Our 2nd annual surfari and 1st fundraiser
membership drive of 2007 is to be held approximately mid-Feb.
Possible speakers, raffle wine and maybe a surf movie provided by the
company PEEL depending on the costs.

Coastal Access and Enhancement (Virgin Creek) property is
for sale. (MacKerricher) Outflow has stopped but channel
remains open. Well see what happens next fall.

Mendocino County Environmental Health and Water Quality
Reviewed letter written by Bob Whitney regarding the sewage spill
dumped into Virgin Creek from the broken pipe which serves
Mackerricher State Park campground.

Chapter Status - We are now listed as an official chapter in
Making Waves.
Blue Water Task Force - Via e-mail from Mendocino County
Department of Environmental Health, ocean monitoring begins April 1st
for the beaches deemed mandatory, (Virgin, Pudding, Big River, Van
Dame.) With Pudding Creek Lagoon a possible permanent posting we
would be allowed 28 additional samples for the season. We would like
to see Wages, Blues and the cove at P.A. included in future
testing.
Coastal Access Virgin Creek We have been working
with the Coastal Conservancy to establish a trail and parking
easement.
Mackerricher Outflow is still working well.
New Business:
International Surfing Day A global celebration of the sport
of surfing is scheduled for June 21st, 06. SURFING magazine will be
working with the Surfrider Foundation to use the day to help raise
awareness of beach and coastal environmental issues. We have e-mailed
Laura Mazzarella and informed her that our chapter will participate.
Members have suggested a paddle out, beach cleanup, potluck after.
Location to be discussed at next meeting.
Hare Creek Steps Members suggest a crew to be set up to
repair and help maintain the steps to Hare Creek as they can be a
safety issue. The access trail steps are owned by the local
homeowners. Members have volunteered to find out more information as
to who to speak to on the maintenance issues.
Fundraiser - at (Big River?) Suggests a Freestyle session or a
Boogie board day for kids. Or perhaps partner with the Water Safety
Coalition for a water safety course for kids to be supervised 1 on 1
with a waiver. Also suggested was seeking assistance from the local
volunteer fire departments.
Snowy Plover We have received an e-mail from Angela Martin
of CDPR to see if we have an interest in the federally threatened
bird. We will ask her to send us brochures to pass out to any one
who is interested in learning more about the birds and their
habitats.
Photos: Our wonderful website donated and maintained by Andy
Harney is in need of some current photos. We would like to see a
photo of the Wave and the winner Andy Harney, if any one can get that
together, that would be a great photo in our website.

Blue Water Task Force County water testing will not be
funded on a regular basis again until April 06. We need to
report problems to Environmental Health in order to pressure them to
test water when pollution is apparent. We discussed a plan as
follows:
FORM: Create a Surfrider Foundation Chapter Form for reporting
problems.
Back up your complaint with statistics as much as possible re.

Sign, date and bring form to Environmental Health office in Ft.
Bragg.
Offer our labor to test water when problems arise.
As a last resort, allocate funds and test water ourselves, sending
to county lab.

Blues Beach Parking Bob and Bill proposed that Surfrider
request custodianship of Blues parking area (If we can get funding,
we would improve parking, road and amenities.)
Lake Cleone Ocean Outlet channel: State parks (Bruce Smith,
ranger in charge of maintenance) has set this Monday, Nov. 14, at
9:30am, to dig out the south channel as we requested. Please come and
bring shovels.
Burl Wood Fundraiser This is our second fundraiser and
membership drive. The sculpture is now at the Caspar Store.
Annual Party/fundraiser/membership drive for 06 Short
flicks. A surf movie film festival, to include locally made surf
movies. We propose a limit of 10 to 15 minutes each, contributed by
5to6 people. We can prescreen and choose. Rodney and Julie have
booked the Senior Center for Jan. 28, 06. We will preview at
our next meeting.

Chapter Status Review Walt talked to Ed Mazerella. Our
article will be published in the next issue of Making
Waves. Our charter is up for approval at the Board Meeting the
month.
Membership Currently 65 members in Mendocino County..
Blue Water Task Force Surfrider volunteers, Jackie, Jack
C., and Victoria have been water testing in cooperation with the
county. Most tests OK. Bad tests at Pudding Creek (lagoon) and
MacKerricher (ocean). Faulty sewer pipes caused pollution at Pudding
Creek. Pipes should be repaired before new construction at Airport
Rd. We hear there is a good possibility for funding to continue for
water testing into January.
Ocean Safety Committee Bill reported that Surfrider has
joined the Mendocino County Water Safety Coalition. PSAs will
continue. The brochure is being revised. There will be a fundraising
dinner at the Mac house the 1st week of March.
Coastal Access / Virgin Creek Status remains the same. A
disclosure of public access is included in the real estate listing.
The trail would be moved to the south side of the property in the
event the property is sold to a private party.
Blues Beach Parking Walt reported for Bill Cull. CalTrans
owns upper segment of parking area next to Hwy 1 and due to concern
for erosion and loss of vegetation has closed off this area for
parking. It was suggested that an explanation be posted.
MacKerricher / Lake Cleone Ocean Outlet Victoria reporting.
We agreed to organize a crew to dig out the channel and request
permission to do so. A tentative date was set for Nov. 5th and
8:00am.
Burl Wood Wave Fundraiser Jackie and Wyatt have created
posters to accompany the Wave sculpture by Kevin Berg. The first
location will be Hidden Treasures in Mendocino. This will
be our second fundraiser and membership drive for the year.
