Mendocino County Surfrider Blue Water Task Force - Working To Keep The Mendocino Coast Water Quality Pristine For All To EnjoyRod samples ocean water

Around 2004 the Mendocino County Department of Environmental Health began water quality testing at selected areas frequented by recreational users. From a surfer’s perspective, however, many of these test sites were mainly dive locations and were little used by surfers, and, additionally, testing was generally conducted only in summer when there’s little swell. With this in mind, the local Mendocino Chapter of Surfriders proposed additional test sites to the County - beaches that are primarily used by surfers and beach goers - and proposed to increase the sampling period into the winter months. Since funding is always a problem for our small county, we proposed to conduct the additional testing on a volunteer basis by Surfrider members. Thus the Mendocino Chapter Blue Water Task Force was created.

Since 2006 our stout and intrepid team (Victoria Krause, Jackie Dooley, and Jack Columbe) have collected water samples (Enterococcus, E. Coli, and Total Coliform bacteria) on a biweekly basis at seven locations throughout Mendocino, and in times of County funding shortfalls they have actually substituted for County employees – all on their own time. The Mendocino Chapter’s Blue Water Task Force is a great example of volunteerism in support of the community.

International Surf Day

Surfers of all ages took to the water at Big River Beach to celebrate Surfing and do a beach cleanup. The waves were small but that did not dilute any enthusiasm.

Annual Global Celebration of the Sport of Surfing and Beach Environments takes place on June 21st. Call it a day to give thanks, get wet and go surfing; International Surfing Day returns this June 21st.

Founded in 2005, International Surfing Day was created to allow surfers and other wave riding enthusiasts to come together in a global celebration of surfing. Whether you are a novice or a pro, shortboarder or longboarder, grom or granddad, this is the day for surfers worldwide to wax up, paddle out and catch a wave. International Surfing Day also provides surfers with an opportunity to give thanks to Mother Nature for providing us these waves by giving something back, so once again the Surfrider Foundation will be hosting beach clean-up events across the country.

“June 21st is the longest day of the year, so there’s no reason to get out there, get wet and then give something back,” says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation spokesperson.

Spring 2009 Surfari Volunteers,

I would like to thank and recognize all the volunteers that helped make this years 2009 Spring Surfari our most successful event thus far. First the ladies in the kitchen were awesome that would be Cathy, Angela, Joan, Clareece and Hollis (they all worked overtime!).Thanks to Dave W, Andy, Trish and Dave and Dianne D for all the help setting up and cleaning up. Linda W, Joan, Julie for the tasty deserts and Bea for the tasty treats. Bill W and Rodney for collections at the door. Bartenders Jack and Bob who both worked overtime. Julie, Kim, Kevin, newlyweds John and Melissa who worked the food and drink tickets table and the membership/t shirt sales table. Pat and Lynda S. who made the raffle most exciting and entertaining.
